Jazz for dummies
I recently made a jazz mix for a friend of mine who is interested in but unfamiliar with the genre. I ended up making two CD's. One is classic jazz- my favorites from the fifties and sixties, and the other is favorites from the last ten to fifteen years. His comments on the classic mix was
I think "Boogie Stop Shuffle" by Mingus was the culprit. I am worried it's one of those things that once you think of it, it's there forever. We'll see.
Anyway, many people who don't know much about jazz ask me about what they should check out. I'm no jazz expert, but sometimes it's easier to take recommendations from someone like me who is into rock and pop than from someone so immersed in jazz they don't understand why everyone doesn't worship Anthony Braxton. So then I had the idea of having a music club. Like a book club. An excuse to get together once a month, drink wine, and feel smart. Who's with me?
Anyway, here's a track listing of the CD I made for Dan. I'll put it on itunes as an imix called "Nate's classic jazz mix" if I can figure out how to.
I Mean You by Thelonious Monk from Thelonious Monk and the Jazz Giants
Doxy by Miles Davis from Bags' Groove
Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul by Charles Mingus from Mingus Ah Um
Boogie Stop Shuffle by Charles Mingus from Mingus Ah Um
All Blues by Miles Davis from Kind of Blue
St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins from Saxophone Colossus
Humpty Dumpty by Ornette Coleman from This is Our Music
Watermelon Man by Herbie Hancock from Takin' Off
The Sidewinder by Lee Morgan from The Best of Lee Morgan
A Love Supreme, Pt. 2: Resolution by John Coltrane from A Love Supreme
Freedom Jazz Dance by Miles Davis from Miles Smiles
So, I'm liking it. But, I constantly feel like I'm in some old movie,
or, watching some old movie, that has a car chase ongoing. With a
yellow cab, and some dude shouting "I'm going to get you, copper!".
So, my question is. Does that ever go away?

I'm so checking those out. I don't listen to a lot of jazz, just a little Dave Brubeck Quartet, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman... and acid jazz
Hi - I think I'm one of those peoeple who are immersed in jazz - although Anthony Braxton isn't my favorite! You've got a good selection here..
